Got Spam?
So apparantly there is a bunch of guys in the States that are "bombarding" facebook users' profiles with spam messages by gaining access to the accounts without the permission of the user. According to the E-Commerce Times, the three individuals are in breach of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, the California Anti-Phishing Act and the Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing Act (CAN-SPAM). Resulting in them paying damages of $711million, that's a lot of spam! Mind you, these individuals are located in te United States along with the rest of the spammers that faebook has successfully taken on, but what about international spammers? How will facebook develop strategies to combat spammers from countries whose internet regulations are still in their infancy? It will be extremely difficult. Let us not forget to ask the question, why is facebook doing this? Could it be because they are not generating any revenue from these indivuduals? It is quite possible. So what is facebook then; privacy rights champion or capitalist enterprise? You decide.
